Bird Walks | February 21st, 28th, March 7th, 21st and April 4th

Bird Walk – West Beach at Deception Pass State Park | February 21st – 10:00 am – 12:00pm

Birding Deception Pass: a Whidbey Audubon and Deception Pass State Park partnership. Walks are designed as a great opportunity for birders of all levels. Practice bird identification skills, explore unique bird habitats and learn from other birders. It is recommended you bring your own binoculars and/or scopes, though there will be a few on hand to borrow.

Location: West Beach – Deception Pass State Park (41229 State Route 20 Oak Harbor, WA, 98277)
A Discover Pass or day permit is required for each vehicle. Whether arriving from the north or south on SR20, you will come to a stoplight at the bottom of a hill. Turn west into the main park entrance. Drive past the welcome station and follow along the winding road until you reach a stop sign, then turn left. Take this road all the way down to the end, which will lead you to the West Beach parking lot. Restrooms are available at this location. Look for a large sign, “Bird Walk.”

Small Sit* at Flintstone Park | February 28th – 12:00 - 2:00pm

Join us for a casual field trip to focus on winter waterfowl and marine birds. We will search the bay for winter visitors from this waterfront park . Expected species include cormorants, bufflehead, wigeon, goldeneye, gulls and the possibility of shorebirds on the beach and eagles soaring over the bay. A scope will be provided, as well as loaner binoculars and field guides for use during the event.

Location: Flintstone Park (SE Dock St. Oak Harbor, WA 98277)
Come for 5 minutes or the full 2 hours. Families with children welcome. A few chairs will be provided or bring your own. Sitting area is flat with short grass. A flat path leads from the parking lot to the viewing area. Accessible restrooms with running water available next to the parking lot in the park and additional parking is available on the street. The park is located across the street from Harbor Station bus stop.

* The idea of the “small sit” is to offer a type of field trip that may allow some who are unable to attend traditional walking field trips an opportunity to go birding and enjoy the outdoors.
